Pride Crosswalk

KPCF is partnering with Amazon and the City of Kirkland to repair and upgrade the defaced Kirkland Pride Crosswalk in Marina Park. As you may know, sadly, vandals badly damaged the crosswalk shortly after it was finished. Funds raised will be used to resurface the crosswalk with more durable, easier-to-maintain methyl methacrylate (MMA) to ensure that it remains a potent symbol for years to come. “Symbols matter,” said Councilmember Amy Falcone when the Crosswalk was unveiled in June 2023. “The installation of this crosswalk is one way that the city is working to create an inclusive and belonging place for all community members.” Amazon is generously matching everyone’s donation, up to $5,000. For every dollar donated, Amazon is adding three more. That means a $50 donation becomes $200!

What will the Pride Crosswalk look like after repair?

The design will remain the same!

How was the crosswalk damaged?

The crosswalk has been defaced at least four times since its dedication in June 2023. Paint has been thrown on it by vandals, and spinning car tires have been used to burn the existing paint beyond repair.

How will this repair make the crosswalk more resistant to vandalism?

MMA is a versatile, durable paint compound used elsewhere in Kirkland by the Public Works Department. Any possible future damage will be simpler to repair since our city workers are used to working with it in bike lanes and crosswalks with plain white striping.
